in class lab: Vape's Position

In the News Article Wendy states "People who use e-cigarettes say they don't smoke but "vape" since the devices heat nicotine into a vapor they inhale. Many see the cigarette lookalikes, which contain no tobacco and far fewer chemicals"(quotation from online article)

In wikipedia a quote states that, "Non-smokers who use e-cigarettes risk nicotine addiction[23] and their use may delay or deter quitting smoking."

According to Donald Blakely, In his book, (2) PG VG and NIC Oh My! DIY E-Liquid beginners guide, He says "There are five main sections in this book covering everything from equipment, software, ingredients, mixing, health and safety precautions and other important considerations."(2)

Blog: Essay Exercise Pg. 92-100

1. She mentions in early part of the essay that "Fossil fuels are dwindling and global warming is attributed from the carbon dioxide gases fuming out from green houses." Early part in the essay expresses a problem of global warming. That not only affects her but every body in the entire world which convinces me plenty.

2. Spriggs argues that from buying from local shops or farmers reduces overall gas fumes. On the other hand, Alex Avery, a director of research and education at the center of global food issues. pointed out that "shipping food from all over the world is a waste of energy and time" Spriggs later responds saying "if we buy only locally we would be sacrificing and not getting certain foods in any season but in the long run it would make foods more enjoyable."

3. I would have to say the last concluding paragraph is the most effective because it not only restates the Thesis toward her argument it restates it with concluding evidence to support her thesis.

4. f.1 shows a picture of pumpkins most likely mid October setting. while talking about buying locally she points out that gases from green houses are a problem. f.2-3 show a garden and farm and while talking about environmental issues. f.4 shows a picture of trucks and talks about economic travels and distributing foods across the world.

The images in this grouping together also convey the concept of individual personality as the styles of a watch itself may vary and become a reflection of a quality each person may wish to convey.
The images in the Symbols of Patriotism grouping are communicating the collective symbols of the “Noble” attributes of their country.

Symbols of Patriotism: The bulldog is standing definitely and it looks like it is proud to be standing on the flag defending britain against all of her enemies.
The american eagle - symbol for the United States of America, the Eagle is posted on every dollar and is a national symbol for American patriotism. The eagle is looks as if it is preparing for battle, flag seeming to symbolize camo paint that soldiers paint on their faces before going to battle, the eagles beak is sharp and its eyes give a fierce look in its eyes like it ready to pounce on any threat that arises.
The British Bulldog on the British flag became a popular symbol after World War 2 representing the determination of the country. This being because the Bulldog was seen as having a determined nature.
The Last symbol is France and instead of animals as its figure it instead has what seem to be 3 books stacked on top of eachother and say Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite which in english translate to Liberty, Equality and Fraternity
All of the flags are of the three colors, Red, White and Blue

The Rolex watch suggests wealth and power. It’s extremely expensive, covered in diamonds, and usually worn by rich people in positions of power. The name Rolex is well known and the diamonds convey that it costs a lot of money.

The Hello Kitty watch suggests a female owner who likes the character Hello Kitty, which is very well known. It’s got a picture of hello kitty on the watch face, and a few rhinestones, as well As the words Hello Kitty.

Reading Sources Critically

The argument the author makes is that white people cannot say the n-word. He uses examples of how other races i.e. jewish comedians may use “derogatory” jokes about themselves but if someone whom was not of that culture made those jokes they would be considered racist towards that particular community.

I find the argument to be quite persuasive. The arguments he makes are very clear; you can talk about your people, but no one else should. essentially saying jokes towards your group doesn't necessarily mean that other people from outside your group can make the same jokes toward your group.

The author’s stance is mainly towards common group relations and the use of certain language and speech toward other groups. Author also acknowledged rednecks and jewish people and the humor related to those two groups and how they can be considered offensive if miss used.

The publisher brings the stance of cultural diversity to the college at which he is presenting  (Boston College.)

I do recognize the idea that you shouldn’t joke about a community that you’re not a part of. If you aren’t Jewish, you shouldn’t make Jewish jokes, etc.

This source supports my position because I personally feel that if you aren’t part of that community, or have not been personally slighted, then you have no right to try to reclaim words that have been used as slurs.

I can tell that the intended audience are those of different cultural backgrounds other than those of the African American community, and the purpose is to bring awareness of the cultural diversity and etiquette.

Blog post: Summarize reading Pg 66-78

In the reading I learned that it is important to be strong in what you are talking about and to exploit the viewers interest, so to speak. Writing also needs to have good information such as historical and meanings to better take a firm position on what you are talking about. Writing also needs a firm understanding on what exactly it is you are talking about but also needs concrete information to back it up. The writing should stay well on task of influencing the readers while maintaining a clear tone and view.

Blog Post:Think about your writing

In a recent essay I have written I took the view of a first person perspective and proceeded to talk about how an old teacher of mine influenced me in to writing and reading. In the essay I have stated a passion for reading but was uninterested in writing, but the teacher was adamant about pushing me higher. She persuaded me to write a story and nothing more other then making sure it was my own. In the essay I was somewhat put off about the how writing thing but later found my self thinking about what story to write about. throughout the essay my stance changed toward a passion for both reading and writing rather than just reading.

Blog Post: "Yes We Can"

The video titled "Yes We Can," is a response and voiced over music video on the speech of Barack Obama. The Video used Voice over and song to reiterate and give power to the speech using a type of Rhetoric known as Anaphora by repeating the phrase "Yes We Can." Throughout the song different people take turns voicing the speech while Obama is talking and by doing so empowers the overall speech. Since there is more than just one person talking and saying "Yes We Can" over and over again with many people one the front. The viewer may be more inclined to think that maybe "We Can" make a difference. A sentence from the speech and lyrics state that the voices of millions of people can move a nation so to speak saying "We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in our way of the power of millions of voices calling for change." Poses the question, "Can we do this?" "Can we clean the nation?" and the simple answer being, "Yes We Can."

Class Lab: Stance

This poster presents its opinion by showing a picture of Hugh Jackman standing behind a giant robot boxer with a title above him saying courage is stronger than steel. In this movie poster they are saying that Hugh Jackman is stronger than steel because he has courage. this appeals to me because it is very cool picture of a giant robot and it is of one of my favorite movies. it uses the words (Reel Steel). If i was to change him for a different audience i would make him wear the armored suit.If i were going to create this ad in a different medium it would change the meaning of the ad to much to have the same meaning. If the ad was put in a movie trailer format the ad would be much more attention getting. Real Steel movie poster. Fanpop.com.2006-2015 A Member of Townsquare Entertainment News. print.

The poster for Wreck-It Ralph shows its stance by having the main character, Ralph, in the middle, surrounded by his supporting characters. It’s saying that he is the most important character. The pixelated font used to display the movie title is a subtle way of telling you that it’s based off of old 8-bit video games. The blue background with Ralph’s repeating face integrates a part of his video games and contrasts with the red lettering of the title. The poster is appealing because it represents the most important characters in a simple and easy manner. The bright red draws you in while the cool blue brightens when it surrounds the characters, pulling your eye to them. Felix, one of the characters, is holding his signature hammer.
To change this poster to appeal to a different audience, I would probably change the coloring and the position of the characters. I would make it grittier and darker, showing a different, less happy side of the movie. The characters would probably be in more of an action scene, with less emphasis on their bright coloring.
If i were to create this in a different medium, I would probably use a movie trailer format and take scenes that displayed the emotion and tone of the film without spoiling the ending. Of course I would focus on Ralph, but I would take scenes in which he is interacting with the other characters, and add humorous scenes as well as a final, mood setting one.

This poster shows its stance on “Drinking” and “Driving” or “Mothers Against Drunk Driving.” Why I chose this topic is because it is a well known thing in our schools. Teaching our kids not to drink and drive and try and put a stop on drinking while driving all together. Though it may be a hopeless tale to grasp these women stepped up to the plate and gave it a shot. The Poster itself is colored with a pitch black background with blood red lettering. Probably to create a somewhat dark surreal touch and hopefully grab the attention of the viewers. The above heading of the poster is the letters “M.A.D.D” following that is “Mothers Against Drunk Driving” all in caps most likely to create emphasis in the text. The below imagery we see a crossed out warning sign with an alcohol bottle and two wine glasses on either side. Likely to state that these things are not acceptable further supporting their stance against “Drunk Driving.” Bottom of the page we see two women, most likely the hosts of the film, looking toward the viewers with a goal in mind. If I were to change the way this message is displayed I would provide imagery of a crashed car and a crying women standing beside the car, providing a somewhat real life situation and getting the optimal attention of the viewers. I would keep the medium on poster but provide different imagery.

  • When another grocery shopper forced himself in between myself and the cash register I politely encouraged him to move back to the end of the line which happened to be 2-3 other people including myself. Unfortunately he was inclined to stay but was soon persuaded by the other fellow costumers in line behind myself.
  • A time when a curious raccoon posed a threat in my yard my big ferocious cat was making himself known by telling that raccoon to leave and that he was trespassing. Mr. Raccoon was wanting to taste some delicious fruits and was not opposed to a good fight. Cat reasoned with him and tussled around for a bit and after which Mr. Raccoon found little to no interest in pursuing the fruit.

Paper 2

History of the Green Movement and its advertising (Trendy or True?)
Ads focusing on “Going Green,” lately have been on the rise due to earth’s resources slowly decreasing. In the past “Going Green” or Environmentalism has been looked down upon and even referred as “Tree-hugging.” Though since the early times of America we have come to know that Environmentalism is not a trend by any means but more of a base of American culture. In fact Environmentalism is the root of the green movement that essentially started when Henry David Thoreau wrote a book called “Maine Woods” in hopes of conservation and protecting the “Virgin Forest.” In 1960s Environmentalism was recognized and boosted by Rachel Carson who wrote “Silent Spring,” in her fight against pesticides and preservation of wild life. Shown in a few ads are example of ways to “Go Green” and can entice the viewer into supporting the Go Green movement by using jokes, sharing a common interest or even insulting the viewer into a guilt trip and make them think about their life style.

Since as far back as 400 BC old waste sites showed little signs of household materials. Throughout history it is human practice to recycle and reuse what resources are available. Today in age people take recycling to a new level by reducing pollution and hazardous chemicals that may be harmful to wildlife. To reduce is to limit the amount of waste and unnecessary products that will later be thrown away. For instance as you grow from a kid you want the most expensive toy only to grow bored with it a week later. Rather than buying that toy only buy what you need. To reuse is find use for an item that has already been used such as buying clothes when you were a kid and growing out of them and instead of throwing them away hand them down to someone who can find use for them. To recycle is to reuse or to break down materials and reuse them for something else. For an example by using recycled tires you can make Artificial grass for a schools track and field.

Text Box: Figure 1 Reduce Reuse Recycle By examining Figure 1 we see the classic symbol of the “Three R’s” or Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The Symbol is wrapped around a circle overlapping the sides of the symbol with trees expanding from within circle. The Words around the circle are overlapping the figure itself and is white in contrast with the blue and green low tones of the figure which pop out of the picture and are easily legible. The circle within the figure is most likely a representation of the earth in a whole. The river represents the clarity of the waters and deer standing next to the river is a representation of the wild life. The trees in the figure represent the forests and more than likely the one tree expanding out of the figure is a message saying instead of cutting trees down let them grow. The eagle flying high above is a symbol of our country the United states and this Figure is dedicated to us and try and get us as a whole to support “The Three R’s” and contribute toward fighting pollution.

Text Box: Figure 2 Feel BetterSome ways of reaching out to people are talking about different animals who are endanger of dying out due to pollution but another tactic is making them somewhat guilty of their wasteful behavior and introduce simple means of using disposable materials. In figure 2 the method used to reach the viewers is insults. We read in parenthesis, “Make yourself” in all caps stating that the message displayed is toward the viewer reading this and following words written in big bold capital letters saying “Feel Better Go Green!” with the words “feel” and the word “go” being the biggest of the few words and shout out emphasis. Analyzing these words specifically reveal that both of them are action verbs and both are followed with an adjective. Following this message is another phrase in parenthesis saying, “Because we’re the only ones that matter!” All together this message is saying by going green it will make you feel better about yourself and you’re the only one that counts. Continuing on in the small text almost insults the reader and states that using disposables does nothing but benefit yourself in thinking you are doing the right thing and tells the reader to give up on “consuming just what you need and clean up after yourself” following this message says “Get over yourself, deal with the truth, and just try being a good person.”

In the visual part of Figure 2 we can see a green background with light green blotches that form what looks like North and South America. The color green is most likely a contribution to the message and to support “Going Green.” Why North America is in the midst of the picture is probably indicating that this message is targeting America in general. Big bold letters are most likely to grab the attention of the viewer and with the pure white letters and the green background it pops out and essentially says “come look at me” so to speak. The word Green is illustrated with grass and leaf vinyl’s showing that this word in particular is the most important. After this message though the words get really small as if the message is trying to drag the viewer closer and ultimately saying “Be a good person.” Insults can be a very effective way to get through to someone especially when they fail to hear the first time.

Since the time of the great depression resources have dimmed and the world is finally realizing that recycling is a really good tool to have. Stated in Figure 3 is a Simple yet blunt statement saying “Go Green” in all bold capital letters showing this is the main point of interest and following this is a statement “There is no Planet B.” A play on words where word “Plan” is replaced to say “Planet” instead to signify that it is our planet we live on now that has no plan b and the resources we have now are what we have. This statement is promoting the message “Go Green” in an effort to reduce the waste and pollution of the planet. Because let’s face it in reality there is in fact no plan B.

Text Box: Figure 3 Go GreenLooking at the visual aspect of Figure 3 we can see the Background is lightly shaded in green from a green outer edge to an almost white inside. The texture of the background looks like a crumpled up piece of paper that has been unfolded and reused to display this message, probably saying recycling is a good approach. The short phrase “Go Green” is in all caps and is in the center of the message as to say this is most important. The letters themselves are made up from grass and is a rich green in contrast to the almost whitish green background. Just under this phrase is a pure white statement message to enhance the cause of the original phrase.

All 3 of these ads have the same theme of going green with the hope of saving the planet. Whether the concept of “Going Green” is “Trendy or True” is for viewers to decide. These ads reach out to individuals in the hopes of fighting for a common purpose and people determined to support the going green movement gain recognition and allow other people to support “Going Green.” Environmentalism is part of everyday life in society because most of us recycle and most of us receive hand-me-downs and if maybe we show a little more effort maybe just “Most” would turn into “All” and we can stick to “Plan A” instead.
